On the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, the legendary Spot 13 pulsed with the energy of a 100% female Jam organized by Cindie Le Disez and M.I.U. During this sunny weekend, this major Parisian hub for graffiti and urban art hosted a visual and musical program open to the public — and the turnout was a resounding success.
More than twenty women artists, spray cans and brushes in hand, perched on ladders facing walls sometimes exceeding six meters in height, took over the vast grounds of Spot 13 to paint live before the audience’s eyes. At the same time, the music stage showcased several talented singers and rappers, transforming the site into a true open-air creative laboratory.
The theme, “Women Who Have Shaped History,” gave rise to a gallery of portraits paying tribute to iconic figures such as Louise Michel, Camille Claudel, Gisèle Halimi, and Virginie Despentes, whose lives and struggles remind us that the fight for our rights is never truly over.
Alongside informational booths, a discussion circle was organized to introduce associations working for women’s rights and to raise public awareness about discrimination, coercive control and violence, as well as health issues. The participating organizations included La Maison des Femmes, EndoMind, Femmes de la Terre, and the Collectif Enfantiste.
The Jam stood out for its deeply supportive and sisterly atmosphere. Women muralists from across France — including Toulouse, Rennes, and Nantes — gathered for a weekend devoted to sharing, mutual aid, and transmission of knowledge. There was no competition here: each artist welcomed, advised, collaborated with, and encouraged the others. An event created by women and for women, where artistic creation became a collective act.
Visible until the end of March, the murals at Spot 13 are complemented by the exhibition Regards de femmes (“Women’s Perspectives”) presented at the 13 Korner. Visitors can discover studio works by the same muralists, as well as take part in new meetings, live paintings, and discussion events organized in the weeks that follow.
More than just an artistic gathering, this month of events at Spot 13 and 13 Korner affirms the essential place of women in French urban art — expressing powerful, shared experiences that are bold, subversive, and resolutely feminine.
